Bits & pieces

So much new music, soo little time!

Metric – Gimme sympathy (acoustic version)

Metric have a new album coming out, Fantasies, on Apr 14. me = excited!

Calvin Harris – I’m not alone

I haven’t really heard much about the new album, except that the only copy of it was lost at London Heathrow Terminal 5. Luckily, it was recovered a few days later. His new album is set to be released in mid-2009 in the UK.

Vampire Weekend – Everywhere

This is just an awesome take on the Fleetwood Mac classic. Better than the original? you decide.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero

Guitarist Nick Zinner ditched the guitar for the synth on their new album, It’s Blitz!, out Apr 15.

Junior Boys – Bits & pieces

Interestingly, this album was put together in a Postal Service kind of way. Begone Dull Care was released in Canada on Mar 24.

According to NME, Peaches has a new album coming out May 4, I feel cream. It features contributions from Simian mobile disco, Digitalism, Soulwax, and Drums of death. It’s been too long since her last endeavor. And what gets me even more excited is her tour plans, which includes a stop in Edmonton.

Peaches – Lovertits

Peaches – Search and destroy

I can’t stop listening to Beyonce’s latest song, “Single ladies”. And the video is even better. If only I could pull moves like that…

And if you haven’t seen it yet, the hilarious SNL parody:

Listening to: Ween – Even if you don’t

This weekend was a busy one. There were three shows I attended: Datarock, Ween, and Juan Maclean

Datarock 11.15.07

overall rating, B-

I was expecting more dance and less rock, but it was still good.

Ween 11.17.07

overall rating, B+

I wasn’t expecting much from this concert, but Ween really blew me away. Their songs come off great live. One thing I must say though. I hated the guitar solo in ‘Voodoo girl’. It was way too long and added nothing to the song. On a better note, I loved ‘Even if you don’t’. I’ve never heard this song til that night (I’ll admit I’m not the biggest Ween fan out there), and now it’s stuck in my head. How can you not like a song with a chorus that goes,

“I love you, even if you don’t
You’ve got your knife up to my throat
Why do you want to see me bleed?”

Juan Maclean 11.17.07

overall rating, B

I actually didn’t have to pay for this one. Not too many people showed up so they started letting people in for free. As for the music, I had no complaints. Everyone who was there was dancing.

Les Georges Leningrad – Supa Doopa

Les Georges Leningrad played the Velvet Underground in my fair city last weekend. I wish more bands like this would visit Edmonton: edgy, eccentric, and danceable. The drummer, dressed in Flintstones-ish leopard print underwear, bumped into me on the way to the stage with an “Excuse moi”. The whole band had this Flintstones/circus freak-show feel going on for them. It definitely worked as a stage/art show. Overall, a very enjoyable concert (video to come!). Outside, I chatted with various peoples, yet it was the teenagers the made me uneasy. soo unpredictable.

It was only a few weeks ago that I got mugged outside of the Velvet Underground/Starlite room. Ok, let me backtrack…it was a Fri night, G and I went to this hipster dance party downtown at the Velvet Underground. The crowd was scant and mediocre at best (no one wanted to dance!). This one guy, though, for one reason or another, polished off his breakdancing moves on the dance floor, and in the process, ended up cracking open his head. There was, literally, blood on the dance floor, a big puddle (which no one cleaned up that I saw). This was the bad omen I should’ve payed attention to. After all that excitement, G and I called it a night and left for the harsh outside. Not too long after passing by, what seemed like a few ‘harmless’ kids, we were being mugged by them. Ok, it was mainly me because G was not only his cell phone, but he was drunk and distracted, unaware of what was going on. The kid flashed what looked like a real gun (G begs to differ), so I did what any sane, sober person would do: I gave him my money. Well, it wasn’t a whole lot, just a $5 bill and a handful of change, to what amounted to around $8 total (I had $60 on me). I thought that was the end of it, but it wasn’t. They followed us to my car and tried to intimidate us even more. Now, G probably did this because he was drunk, but he told them off and was egging them on for a fight, which ended up not happening. I think because of this they backed off and finally left.

I’ve lived in Edmonton all my life, yet this was the first time I’ve ever been mugged in this city. It was also on this night that there were a total of 4 stabbings in Edmonton, one of them not even a block away from where I was mugged. I realize G or I may have been stabbed that night, had we pushed these kids. Point is, there’s way too much violence in this city. Like really, what the fuck is wrong with people today?
